Brilliant student from AJK deserves much better

A brilliant student belonging to the AJK, who secured top honours in the recently-held Higher Secondary School Certificate Annual Examination conducted by the Rawalpindi Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, needs attention of the concerned authorities so that he could realise his dreams.

Sudheer Ahmed (Roll Number 743946) appeared in the HSSC examination (humanities group) and bagged first position by securing 852 marks. He has also been awarded a gold medal.

Sudheer Ahmed, a resident of Hattian Bala, Muzaffarabad, belongs to a poor family. His father works as a mason. The teenager passed the Secondary School Certificate Examination from Mirpur, AJK. Later, he migrated to Rawalpindi to get higher education, but his financial position did not let him get admission in a college. He was provided shelter and food for some months by a charity organisation based in Gulzar-i-Quaid.

He started preparations for the 2009 annual examination in difficult circumstances when the charity organisation refused to support him any further. In a state of despair, the youngster left for his hometown to prepare for the examination. After receiving the schedule for the examination, he returned to Rawalpindi. However he faced lots of problems in finding shelter and food.

He went to his teacher, Tariq Mehmood, who taught him English at the charity organisation. Tariq Mehmood arranged a room for Sudheer Ahmed in an elementary school where he stayed without any light and fan during hot summer.

Finally his hard work paid off when on August 15 his teacher Tariq Mahmood informed him that he secured first position in humanities group.

Now Sudheer Ahmad has got admission at Punjab College of Commerce, Rawalpindi, in B.Com on a scholarship. But still, the boy is facing the problem of shelter. Currently he is living in a dilapidated room of the elementary school.

Talking to ‘The News,’ Tariq Mahmood said that the government should encourage such students. They are ‘hidden diamonds’ and should be supported so that they could prove themselves in future.
