Driver, helper injured in train accident

HYDERABAD: Around ten tankers of a goods train derailed and the driver and helper sustained injuries in an accident between two goods trains on the main railway track near the Kotri Railway Crossing on Thursday.

The District Coordination Officer Jamshoro, Samiuddin Sidiqi, said a Multan-bound goods train was on halt near the Kotri Railway Junction when another goods train coming from Karachi on the same track with tankers of crude oil dashed it, causing derailment of the engine and ten tankers of crude oil.

He said that the engine driver, Shahid, and his helper Rashid received serious injuries. They were shifted to a hospital in Kotri from where Shahid was later moved to the Liaquat University Hospital due to his critical condition.

The accident resulted in leakage of crude in massive quantity. However, the police and the Railway staff reached the spot and stopped the leakage. Efforts are being made to clear the main track by lifting the derailed tankers and restore the railway traffic, which has been halted at different stations, he added.
