John Abraham was born in Mumbai on December 17, 1972 and has lived there his whole life. As a young boy, he attended the Bombay Scottish School where he was always in the top fifteen of his class.
He was always in love with soccer and coached the Bombay Scottish soccer team for a while. John Abraham has always described himself as an athlete. While in school, his specialty was the sprint. He specialized in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Then while he was in college he took up Taekwondo, which allowed him to study with master Javed Khan.
While in college, Abraham BA honors in economics. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he went onto to his MMS from Mumbai Educational Trust. However, he would eventually drop out of the course.
It was while working as a media planner at a Mumbai ad agency, Enterprise-Nexus, that John Abraham received his first taste of modeling. One day a model ditched a shoot and Abraham’s boss asked him to fill in for the absent model.
Then in March of 1999 Abraham entered the Glad Rags Manhunt and reached the finals. He flew down to the Philippines and was the first runner up. After that, Abraham began his career as a model.
He was signed by Carrie Models in Singapore. This allowed him to travel all over the world on modeling assignments, such as Hong Kong, London, and New York. During this time, Abraham was also appearing in music videos. Eventually his modeling career sent him back to India and back to advertising.
But this time John Abraham was in a different role. The media planner had become the model. He first TV commercial was for Cinthol. He also became the first Asian model for Levis.
John Abraham never originally considered himself to be an actor. That was until he was offered a role on the big screen by Pritish Nandy. The project wound up being shelved but it opened a new door for Abraham.
He began to study films and actors to ensure that he would make it on the big screen. Abraham’s first starring role came on January 17, 2003 in the film ‘Jism.’ The role thrust Abraham into the spotlight and he starred in a slew of films.
Abraham describes his experience on the set ‘Dhoom’ as ‘the most fun I’ve had with my pants on.’ This was mostly due to the fact that he spent a large junk of his filming riding around on the Suzuki Hayabusa.
In 2005 his film ‘Water’ premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Abraham called this experience a ‘humbling event.’ John Abraham has consistently worked in films since his breakthrough in 2003 and shows no signs of slowing down. He is involved with eight film projects set to come out in 2009 and 2010.
John Abraham has been dating Bipasha Basu since 2002.
