ISLAMABAD, Oct. 15 — Pakistan’s new government has pledged to secure its border with Afghanistan, as well as invest in the country’s educational institutions. Hussain Haqqani, Pakistan’s ambassador to the U.S. said that shifting from a military to democratic leadership in Pakistan has changed the tone of the country.
Strengthening Pakistan requires strengthening the country’s constitutional foundations. No individual or group alone can ensure the security and integrity of Pakistan,” he said.
He also added that strengthening security in Pakistan depends on securing the country’s border with neighbouring Afghanistan, noting that, “Progress has been achieved in moving beyond the era when the two countries constantly played a blame game instead of working together to ensure that Al-Qaeda and the Taliban no longer pose a threat to Pakistan, Afghanistan and the rest of the world.”
Haqqani also added that there must be much more investment in human resources in the country.
“This involves investing in education in Pakistan so that our school enrolment goes up from 52 percent of school-age children to 100 percent,” he said.
According to Haqqani, Pakistan could potentially become a major hub of trade between the Middle East, Central Asia and South Asia as well as an important port of entry into the markets of China and India.
”Pakistan cannot be isolated from the forces of globalisation and we look to Pakistanis living abroad to play the role of intermediaries between the world and our traditional culture,” he added.
