TURKMENISTAN — It was an excellent year for Turkmen wine producers at the Yalta/Golden Griffin wines and liqueurs competition held in Ukraine's Crimea region earlier this month.
The Yalta/Golden Griffin awards are granted by the Paris-based Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin, founded in 1924, which now includes 43 nation members. Traditional-style tastings were held for 200 different wines provided by 65 growers from 17 nations, including France, Spain, Germany, Slovakia and countries of the former Soviet Union, Turkmenistan was represented by the wine division of the nation's Food Industry Association.
Turkmen wines were recognised as ‘best tasting’ in several categories. Grand Gold Medals were awarded to 'Yasman Salyk', a white dessert wine produced by the Gektepin winery, and to 'Beyik Galkynysh,' an aged brandy made by the Ashgabat Winery.
Gold medals went to the white dessert wines 'Terbash,' 'Byuzmeyin,' 'Aygul,' 'Byasleshik' and 'Sovgat,' with dry red 'Oguzkent' and the fortified white 'Kopetdag' rounding out the gold medals. 'Oguzkent also garnered an honorary certificate for label design.
'Gara Izyum,' a white dessert wine produced by the Gektepin winery, garnered top billing as the Best Wine of 2009.
While Turkmen wine connoisseurs would love to enjoy the nation’s high-quality wines, they are produced in limited quantities and are not available at the local corner store. Instead, the average shopper is more likely find fortified wines with tastes that leaves much to be desired.
